How does Digits work?
Think of Digits as similar to a VoIP service, such as Skype, where you can log into a dedicated app in order to send and receive phone calls. There’s a Digits app for both Android and iOS that you can install in order to send and receive calls on those devices from your T-Mobile number.
Good news if you’ve got a Galaxy phone — any Galaxy S6 and later (including the S8 and S8+) and the Note 5 have Digits functionality built in.
But Digits isn’t just about staying connected from a different phone. You can also make and receive phone calls from a computer. Go to the Digits website, and, after logging in with your T-Mobile ID, you can manage which numbers you want to use.
Note that you’ll need to use either Chrome or Firefox; the Digits website doesn’t work on Safari.
Sounds similar to Google Voice…Yes, Google Voice gives you a single number to use across multiple devices. The advantage to T-Mobile Digits is that you’re able to add multiple lines — up to five numbers per device as well as five devices per number.
And… if you’re one of the 30 million users in the U.S. who carries two phones, along with two (costly) corresponding plans, then you’re going to really like this concept.
Digits is in direct competition with Google Voice / Project Fi and is it good enough to make someone jump ship from there?
Probably not as the rates 7 costs are really low in comparison. But if Digits existed before I jumped over to Fi, I might have given it a second thought. However, in the meantime, all this innovation is good for the consumers…making the market a lot more competitive and in some cases offering more reasonable prices.
Final thoughts are…Currently the setup and management are confusing and unstable. If all you need is a second or disposable number on one device, Sideline (for one number) and Burner (for many) offer better management UIs, although Burner has trouble receiving calls.
T-Mobile needs to speed up the responsiveness of its management app, shape up the Web client, and make the division between SIM numbers, “cloned” SIMs, and virtual numbers clearer.
However, you may be thinking I like the concept of this… and…. If it sounds a bit like Google Voice (which is also a follow-me, single phone number-based service), then you would not be wrong as Digits is fundamentally a combination of Google Voice and AT&T NumberSync.
Can You Change the Checking Account You Link to Digit?
Although you can only have one checking account linked to Digit at a time, you can easily change the account anytime. Go into the application and access your account settings by clicking the icon in the upper left corner with your initials. Click “Change” next to the connected checking account.
Remember, if you change the checking account digit, you cannot connect to Digit, you must withdraw any funds you have in Digit into the account.
After you change accounts, you can then re-add any funds you want manually. If funds are pending to be added to your Digit account, they will be returned to you as soon as your bank reconciles and makes them available. This can take three business days.
If the original account is closed, you will have to withdraw the funds via check. You will need to go to a link for disconnecting your checking account and select “Checking account closed?” You will then receive a check in the mail.
What Goals Can You Save For?
With Digit, you can save for any goal that you want to. You just let the application know what you are saving for and let it analyse your spending. From there, the application will budget for you and help you save, automated savings.

Then, once linked, Digit begins to monitor your checking account balance. Over time, it builds up an algorithm that determines when you spend your money, and when you get paid. The idea is that when it sees an opportunity to stash some money away, it transfers it automatically to your Digit account. The company says it checks your account every few days “every 2 or 3 days.” The transfers are typically between $5 and $50.

It has a monthly fee of $5. There is a monthly fee for using the app. If you aren’t a natural-born saver, it could be worth the small fee to let Digit do the saving for you.
There’s a real possibility Digit could put you into overdraft if you’re not careful. The good news is Digit will reimburse you for up to two instances of overdraft. That’s why it’s important to set a maximum daily savings amount to make sure you don’t go in the red.
Digit doesn’t evaluate your spending on credit cards. The app can’t look into your spending habits on your credit card, but more than likely you pay your credit card using your checking account. In this way, the app is indirectly taking your credit card purchases into account.
Digit uses an algorithm to determine how much money you can save. This is how it takes the thinking out of saving. It doesn’t necessarily save the same amount every week or even every month. It continually calculates how much you can save each day and puts the money aside accordingly. If your income changes or you suddenly go on a spending spree, your savings will change in line with that.
All you need to get started with Digit is your personal ID and your checking account information. You do have to provide Digit with your login information for your checking account, which they link to your Digit account. The first few days after you sign up, Digit analyses your cash flow in the account. It then determines the best pattern to withdraw money, putting it into your savings account.
