How to check if a phone number is still active

The easiest and most direct approach is to simply call the number.

If it’s not in service then you will very quickly get an automated message telling you that.

If it is in service then it will ring a few times and either be answered or go to voicemail.

Block your outbound CLID before each call or call from a number that isn’t yours. If the number you’re calling is active they won’t know it’s you this way.

If the number you are calling says it has been disconnected try calling using *67. That will block the phone recipient from seeing your phone number. If the number your are calling still says it is disconnected then most likely, it is.

You could also try calling from another number or someone else’s phone.

However, there is no true way of knowing. Even by sending a text successfully is not a guarantee that the person is receiving it through a cellular network. For example, I have a ConXhub number, and I have all text and calls forwarded directly to my cell. When I place a call or send a text it goes through the Voice servers and displays my ConXhub number on other people’s phones. Essentially I have never given anyone my actual cell number that was assigned to me by my carrier, and if my cell was to ever lose service my ConXhub number is still active and will still receive text and calls which will be forwarded to my busy inbox to be checked later.

However, to my knowledge most people don’t have their phones setup the way I do, so sending a SMS text that does successfully “go through” is in most cases sufficient enough evidence to show a phone is active. If your SMS app kicks back a message saying there was an error, there is a good chance your text was either blocked, or, their phone service is inactive and couldn’t receive it.

Establishing contact in any other way (WhatsApp, Skype, etc) is NOT a guarantee as the user can be connected via WiFi, and all of that traffic travels through remote servers so matching an IP address to an ISP/carrier is not an option either.

Every other method I can think of (such as establishing a Telnet connection) requires voluntary action from both you and the other person, so that won’t work either.

One last thing, some carriers will still forward calls to voice mail even if the service has been suspended which could make it seem like someone’s phone is still active even when it really isn’t and sometimes a blocked text is actually a problem with your service making a phone seem inactive when it really isn’t.
