Is Voice Better then Video?

How does it make you feel when you hear the voice of a loved one on a phone call? It often brings back memories of what it is like to be with them. There could be a memorable moment that springs to the forefront of your mind. You miss them, you remember them, you become reconnected.

Phones are a part of everyday life now. It is hard to imagine the world before phones, but can you try to imagine what it was like when people were just getting used to phones? When phones are new to the market? This can be exemplified these days through the older generation making their first video call, and seeing loved ones from the other side of the world whom they have not seen for months, maybe years.

Well, voice calls can be traced back to the invention of the telephone in 1874. Since that first crackled line and broken phone call, things have developed a long way.

Can you imagine what life would be without the voice call? If you work you know first hand the importance of the phone call. Calling customers, colleagues, partners and support is a part of everyday life. You can not complete your day without a voice call, or usually several.

A fun fact, did you know that the first words ever spoken on a telephone was made by inventor Alexander Graham Bell on March 10, 1876 saying to his assistant, “Mr. Watson–come here–I want to see you.”

Voice calling is the ability to connect and converse with people in real-time using a telephone through speaking into one end and listening into the other. Through Voice calls we connect with business partners, clients, and colleagues. We can troubleshoot, gauge tone, and engage in personalised conversation. Voice calling encourages relationships on all levels of your business.  It can strengthen trust in your client-employer relationship and develop satisfaction with employees and in teams. The voice call feature allows anyone to make or receive a call using your specific number, assigned to you through your network. If you press the phone number saved on your contacts, it will connect you with a regular phone call to the one you like to speak with.  It is so simple, so easy, so fast to make a voice call.

Calling can happen over a traditional phone line, smartphone, or even a pc connected to a headset and microphone. While there are many good options available, if international calls make up a lot of your communication, then fees could be excessively high. The price of calls is still a concern for many.

As the world evolves, new inventions and technologies come about to fix problems that we didn’t know needed fixing. Long ago, the Video call could only be seen on futuristic sci-fi films. Now even 2 year olds can work smart phones and call Grandparents on the other side of the planet. Video calling is so commonplace that it is taking over the home and the office. Who could have thought that we would make it this far from the invention of the mobile telephone in the 80s.

What are the key differences between Video calls and Voice calls?

You might have a clear idea. Surely, the only difference is that a video call allows you to see the person you are speaking with, right? It goes beyond that.

In any situation, communication is a vital ingredient to ensure success in delivering one’s message. It can manage emotions, communicate concerns, keep families together and in business, can increase an organisation’s productivity.

In an era where most of the employees work remotely, getting in touch with our co-employees is necessary to check the team’s work progress. With computers, internet connection, and efficient virtual communication solutions, it is possible to have real-time communication with an individual or a group of people from different locations and time zones.

Today, we have limitless options for real-time communications over the internet for almost everyday, there are tech companies that create platforms such as WeChat, Kakao Talk, Viber, Telegram, Discord, etc. Most of these solutions support both video and voice calls. You may find tools that support only voice, but they are becoming the minority. But why, when voice is so much easier, simpler, and you don’t have to do your hair and make up just to chat to someone!?

Typically, these two types of communication modalities are quite common when it comes to the virtual communication world, but is there really a difference between the two? Perhaps we may ask ourselves this: when should you use a voice call rather than a video call and vice versa? Well, let’s try answering some of these concerns by scrolling down and find out if there is any difference between a video call and voice call in the latter sections.

What is a video call?

As stated earlier, video call is generally a phone call that needs an internet connection. It is called Voice over the Internet Protocol (VoIP), that needs video to transmit live pictures of the person initiating the call. Now, there are countless solutions available that make video calls possible even without the need of a cell phone. You can now create video calls while using a computer that has a webcam or other electronic devices with a video-capable camera, like a tablet, smartphone, or a video-capable phone system. Having a camera on your device will enable you, the caller and the recipient to see and hear each other in real time.

If you want to do a video call, technically, there are a few things that you need to get started. First, ensure that you have a reliable internet connection. It is advisable that you make use of strong Wi-Fi signals before calling. Next, you have to ensure other support peripherals are working properly. For instance, your microphone and camera access should be enabled. If you are using a computer, headphones or speakers should be plugged into the computer to hear and be heard by the recipient of the call.

What is a voice call?

Unlike a video call, with a voice call, you cannot see live pictures, but you just hear what the other person is saying. The principle of this type of communication is more less the same as that of a video call. In fact, even virtual communication solutions, like Viber and Facebook Messenger, for instance, also allows its user to pick whether they like to make video calls or voice calls. Technically, the cameras are just turned off in a voice call while speakers or headphones are on. If you will be using virtual communications solutions then you will still need  a good internet connection. Of course, that is not always the case for voice calls because a lot of mobile phones support voice calls that only require having enough credit to initiate and make a voice call.

Difference between a video call and a voice call

The difference between the two standards of virtual real-time communication is apparent from their definitions. A further distinction in the two terms can be explained based on their applications, requirements, and costs aside from their definition.

  • Requirements

Even though both video call and voice call can use the same communication device or virtual communication tool. To create a voice call, it will only require you basic things like a phone with credit. Video calls require more than that. If you like to transmit and receive clear live pictures you will need a good internet connection, perhaps 3G or 4G to stream videos and images. Moreover, cameras, and headphones are other things to be considered in making a video call because the resolution of your face can also be affected if you have a poor quality camera.

  • Functionality

If you opt to be simple whilst getting the message delivered, then voice call is the one for you. If you need to demonstrate complex things, like showing people what you are talking about, or introducing others into the call, then maybe the video call is suitable for such situations.

  • Price

Good thing about voice calls is it does not require large bandwidth and additional devices, which makes it cheaper than a video call. If you subscribe to virtual communication tools, you will notice that the voice call feature is cheaper to use than a video call.

We cannot neglect how cost-effective voice calls can be too, when you compare the time it might take to put together a presentation, guid someone round a property, or take and share photos.

Now that we know the difference, we can decide the standard that meets one’s daily communication needs. We may think that video calls surpass voice calls because it allows the end receiver to see the person they are talking to but let us think of this: If video calls are better then why do messaging applications include an option for people to turn their cameras off?

If you are a business owner then you can take note of these benefits especially if you are torn between shifting your company to purely video call or considering leaving the voice call process for your employees. Arguably, if you are running a number of employees then audio conferencing should be one of the factors to see if video or voice call would be the most effective tool for communication.

So, what are the benefits of voice calls?

  1. Telephones are widely accessible. Telephones are evident in public spaces. They are simply everywhere.  Plus, a number of offices these days provide each employee with a dedicated line. However given a situation where one needs a fast response, making a voice call is much efficient for asking a question. It is faster, easier, more efficient and safer. You don’t have to be aware of your backdrop, or data privacy on the phone, you don’t have to worry that someone is taking screenshots of your products and office space. You are not giving people additional information on where you live, where you work and who is with you. You can mask your location and protect yourself more.

  1. Multiple Conversations – just like video calls, did you know that you can also talk to several people all at once in one call even if it’s only a voice call. This kind of conversation is normal in businesses that have multiple locations. Surely you remember the Conference Call?

  1. Attend even if physically unable – say one employee is sick and needs to rest in bed, we can agree that voice calls are effective for such a person to attend the meeting remotely.  Noone wants a video call with a sick person from their bed!

  1. Voice calls are simple – voice calls are easier to answer than video calls. They do not require the setting up of cameras and microphones and other gadgets aside from a phone. Hence, video calling applications like Skype, Zoom, Google Meet and MS Teams require a certain technological know-how to enable video calls.  How many times have you tried to have a video call with someone and all you can see is a close up of the side of their head? Or a view straight up their nose, and a voice saying “Is it on?”

  1. Video calls can be awkward – if you are not presenting something for visualization, video calls can be often awkward as facial expressions can give things away. For those who are working from home, video calls can cause discomfort especially if the background does not give an office-like ambiance.  How many Viral videos can you remember off the top of your head with children, dogs or other distractions entering the frame of view?

  1. During this pandemic there are daily reminders that Video calls do not work for everyone. Court cases, school classes or formal meetings getting hacked. People getting sacked from work for wearing inappropriate clothes and forgetting they are on video. Screensavers popping up. People forgetting their video is on, and standing up to reveal… well, not much! On the BBC there have been several home-based interviews that have been interrupted by children, nurses, dogs, or the flushing of toilets.  When the call ends, forgetting to turn off the video and going on to inappropriate sites has caused some problems for people.

Then there is the Freeze Frame – OMG – How many times has the screen frozen during a meeting when you are pulling the silliest of faces!?

I am sure that you have many examples in your mind of times when you wish you did not have to use a video call!

If I were to choose, I believe that voice call is better than video call especially for group communication.

According to Dr. Marissa Shuffler, PhD, an associate professor of industrial-organisational psychology at Clemson University in South Carolina, the exhausting part of using Zoom and other video platforms is the sheer number of faces you’re confronted with at once, including your own. This includes trying not to be distracted by faces, haircuts and “home clothes” of people. Not to mention kids running in the background or trying to join in. Even being confused about whether to look at the presentation or the speaker’s face. At least on a conference voice call, you can choose to focus your eyes at whatever is most comfortable for you— it may be the afternoon sky, your sleeping dog, or even the trees outside— that will leave you more focused on what your colleagues are saying, rather than trying to figure out where to focus your eyes on a busy, lagging screen.

A study conducted in 2017 of Yale University also supports how voice call is better. In the study, the researcher divided participants into three groups. One group watched and listened to a video of a group of friends talking while the second group only heard the interaction, a third group saw the video without sound. The results found that those who heard the friends talking, without also seeing them, were better able to deduce how the friends felt better than the other two groups. In another experiment, participants had conversations in person, some of them in dark rooms. The participants in the dark rooms had a better time understanding how their conversation partner felt than those in brighter rooms.

You probably experienced turning off your camera in a conference call. Who would blame you? Some people use the excuse “The line is getting choppy when I use my video”. Not always true, it is more common that people just do not want to be on video.  There are so many different reasons why some people choose to not show their faces during phone calls. One thing is for sure and that is no matter how many technological advancements are made in terms of communication, the importance of only hearing one’s voice in a call is necessary.

A voice call only demands one of among the five senses; hearing.

The likelihood of experiencing distractions in the course of the call is lessened, since it only involves one person speaking, while the others listen and accordingly respond to the one talking. In addition to that, a major aspect of voice call can also be appreciated when it comes to preparedness. When we are only using voice calls, it doesn’t matter where the speaker is as long as the voice is clear to hear and understand. You might answer voice calls while in public areas. You do not have to consider other people. You don’t have to focus on the video, and you can still walk around safely.
