Quality of Service (QoS) - ConXhub

Quality of Service (QoS)

QoS Meaning: Prioritising Quality over Quantity

Some internet traffic is more important to the user. People coming to a website and scrolling through blogs is less important than people who completing an application.  The application process must therefore be prioritized. Having a Zoom meeting or an uninterrupted phone conversation through your internet is more important than playing games or downloading a big file. The meeting or the phone call must therefore be prioritized. Getting your Quality of Service settings correct means that you can prioritise the important things, so they happen faster, better and more efficiently than the less important things.

The Basics: How QoS could improve your life.

With the increased numbers of people working from home, there needs to be a focus on how to optimize the internet usage in the home.  When people are in the office environment, they do not play games, watch Youtube, stream movies, and have multiple people all doing different things on the same router. With good QoS rules and by managing the settings on your router your internet will be better. You could optimize your phone calls, increase the speed of your laptop, and make sure that your kids can still play games, without affecting quality of service.

What is important to you, might not be the same as what is important to others, so there is no universally accepted meaning to QoS.  These 3 steps will help:

Understand your goal. When thinking about the QoS meaning for your set up, what are you trying to achieve? Fewer dropped calls? Faster Netflix streaming? Less frozen screens on Zoom?

What speed works best? Knowing your internet speed is important. Then you can divide that speed and those data packets against the functions that you want to prioritise. After you have found your internet speed through a reliable site like Speed test you know your Mbps speed and can calculate your kbps speed by multiplying by 1000.

Prioritising services through QoS rules. This is the process of deciding which services you want to use up more of your bandwidth even at busy times. Even if your bandwidth is at 100% Capacity, using all the download and upload capabilities that you have at your disposal some services should always work, and be optimized. Your children’s games can crash instead of your work meeting freezing. These rules can be programmed into your router.

Allowing your children’s games to crash, or Netflix to freeze instead of dropping that important business call is the QoS Meaning for your internet usage.

Applied QoS Meaning: How to improve efficiency.

There are times in the day when internet usage is greater. If you are working from home, it might be when your partner wakes up, or your children are doing their schooling. If you are in the office, it might be when the second shift logs in before the first shift leaves.

There are times of day when your business might accept more phone calls from customers. Customers might call before work, on their breaktimes or after work. Most peak call times can be planned for; however, some are sporadic.  Marketing campaigns and responses to TV Adverts cannot be planned for.

These peak times cause an increased strain on your servers and can lead to discrepancies in performance. Calls can drop, systems can break, websites can freeze. With these discrepancies in performance more calls are generated from customers complaining about the problem. The negative QoS cycle affects your call volume until it is back under control.

Without solid QoS rules in place, these peaks and troughs of traffic can disrupt your business and cause a backlog of complaints from customers and in your IT Department.   QoS means managing and anticipating these patterns of behaviour so that the workplace runs more efficiently and effectively.

QoS means that the disruption caused by an increase in traffic is minimized, and the important functions that you have prioritized always work.

Applying QoS Meaning to your Phone; Can You Hear Me?

When using your phone, fast is best. The less time it takes for data packets to reach the receiver, or the intended place, the better the quality of the call. Latency is the amount of time that it takes a data packet to reach its intended end point. When there is latency, the speaker might ask a question, wait for the answer, then ask “Can you hear me?” just as the recipient is answering their first question.  How annoying is that?

Reducing latency improves the speed and connectivity of phone calls. QoS means less overlapping speech, less robotic sounds, and fewer dropped calls.

Better QoS means phone users can hear a full phone call, without drops in audio, missed sentences or lost meaning. Phone messages do not get lost in translation; they get lost in QoS Meaning.  Poor QoS management leads to periods of silence in phone calls where the data packets are getting stopped on their journey from the speaker to the receiver.  Bad QoS processes can lead to data getting mixed up, sent to the wrong place, and bad data coming into the phone call.

An additional bonus to having excellent QoS processes is an increased level of security within your network. A QoS system can manage safe data packets, making sure that the safer the data, the more it is prioritized.  It is safe to call locally, or safe to call certain numbers. These systems can be programmed in to your QoS. It is unsafe to have too many calls at once, and to spend time calling foreign countries that could be very expensive. Managing your QoS can add security and peace of mind.

The QoS meaning for VoIP; Can You Hear Me?

Quality of service is all about the use and the control of packets of data on the internet. This is exactly how VoIP telephony works. VoIP phone calls are packets of voice data sent across the internet from one person to the other so they can have a real-time conversation.

In the middle of a Skype call, or a VoIP call for work, if your internet usage peaks with a burst of social media usage, or a colleague downloading a big file, or your children coming home from school and watching Netflix, you lose that call connection.

VoIP and QoS are intrinsically linked. Without a basic understanding of QoS meaning, your internet will be choppy at times. That choppy internet means that your internet is prioritizing the bigger files, and larger downloads over the voice data packets. Whilst it is unavoidable at times, with good QoS processes in place it can be simple to manage.

The QoS meaning for Video calls; Now you see me, now you……

When your QoS affects a video call it can lead to embarrassing faces freezing on screen mid-speech. In these recent times, with more people working from home, team meetings must be remote. Video calls have replaced international travel, and conference table meetings. These meetings require strong, reliable, and consistent internet speeds. Without good QoS management, important meetings can be missed, frustrations can build, and team communication can fail.

The pictures of frozen faces and comments of “Are you still there?” have permeated meetings for 2 years. With a better understanding of QoS and adapting that for the home internet so many businesses would run smoother.

The QoS Meaning for Freelancers

Knowing the limitations of your home internet is vitally important for people restricted to working from home, by choice or by opportunity. Ensuring peak work hours are optimized, means that clients and business partners will be happy with the level of output and work can be even more productive.  Sometimes we need the hotel we are staying in to also have a good understanding of QoS processes to be able to manage the different needs of guests in different rooms, however, you are in control of your own internet at home, and you can manage your QoS for your clients.

The QoS Meaning for Mobile

Mobile is not internet. This makes mobile calling much easier. Your mobile sometimes hangs or freezes, especially when there are too many apps working at the same time. This is a QoS problem for your mobile. This can often be resolved by turning it off and on again, or by closing apps that are not used. Whilst the Mobile Networks are not perfect, they are a lot more stable and clearer than the internet and take a lot less QoS Checks to manage.

Our commitment to Quality of Service

We use the Mobile network to offer crystal clear communication for all our users. We monitor our technology constantly, fine tuning it and improving it so that you, our valued customer, gets the best service possible from a mobile communications provider. International calls sound like you are speaking to someone just next door due to our QoS processes.  The meaning we attribute to our QoS Diligence provides you with the best possible product for your phone calls, locally and internationally.
