A SIP Protocol is what is needed for VoIP to work, it is what manages and controls the flow of call traffic along an internet connection. At the risk of getting too technical too soon, you’ll know VoIP through using services like Skype, Google Voice or Whatsapp Calls, it is Voice over Internet Protocol. Basically, when you are making a Skype call, you are using VoIP technology.
That Technology needs 2 end points. The end point of the caller and the end point of the receiver. There are also intermediary points along the way; connections to servers managing the call as it flows between the 2 end points. The connection between end points is controlled and managed by SIP.
SIP means Session Initiation Protocol. So, when you start a call, add someone to a call, set up a conference call, end a call, or transfer a call you are using the SIP Protocols to manage all aspects.
There are a lot of moving parts to a VoIP call, and a lot of intermediary servers giving rise to the risk of breakage, blockage or termination of services. This is one of the reasons why some VoIP calls can disconnect, or your voice might turn robotic.
Imagine you are driving your car from city to city. The flow of the traffic is the VoIP technology. If it flows well, there are no problems and everyone gets to where they need to go in a timely manner.
If there are too many vehicles, roadworks, an entrance ramp is closed, a crash on the road, or even bad weather affecting driving, this can affect the flow of traffic. This is SIP. It can suffer from routing issues and cause a loss in quality, particularly between the user and the initial server.
The reality is that the internet was designed to move data around, which is does really well but was not designed to handle Phone calls.
Now take Mobile Phone technology, this was designed from the ground up to handle phone calls and even whilst on the move. It does not rely on SIP https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_Initiation_Protocol or VoIP technology, is robust and easy to use. How much easier and simpler does that already sound?
Mobile Communication doesn’t need to navigate its way around a myriad of issues. Taking the travelling analogy further it is like taking a helicopter over the motorway. It is faster, smoother and clearer with less blockages and less issues involved in the technology that support the communication.
