“there’s gold in them thar hills”. For Telcos they don’t have to look very far to see the very hills, Mark Twain could have referred to, today.
The VoIP industry is expected to be worth over $335bn during the course of the next few years, and Mobile Operators are well positioned to pick up a large chunk of this revenue.
Given the number one choice of communication device whether for work or personal use is the mobile phone, Mobile Operators are incredibly well-placed to capture a large share of the VoIP industry. Smartphones are preferred due to their portability and versatility. They allow users to make phone calls, send text messages, use various messaging apps, and access social media platforms, and their convenience and adaptability make them an easy choice over, PC’s, laptops, Tablets and Desk Phones!
Don’t be fooled into thinking mobiles are only a useful business tool for tradesman or small businesses, because smartphones are now capturing Call Centre usage too! Once the preserve of the Desk Phone & PC, smartphones are proving themselves a better choice by bringing mobility, flexibility, and multitasking capabilities for agents.
With Operator revenues and ARPU decreasing and costs rising year-on-year, there are only so many cost-cutting exercises a business can do before it is forced to look at attracting more revenues. One area that has huge potential is in offering VoIP style services and features, in other words, tap into the multi-billion-dollar revenue stream that is the VoIP industries backyard.
Historically, this has seemed like a real challenge, after all, Mobile Operators are cellular centric and getting involved in; VoIP systems, hardware and all that involves, is not their game. However, given end users prefer the smartphone over any other device, and given cellular is a stronger all round communication highway, operators are actually better placed than they might first imagine.
In simple terms, all Operators need to do is bolt on PBX Switchboard services, find a way of adjusting caller ID’s, terminate calls over their network, and they are good to go!
They might look to partner with one of the big VoIP operators like RingCentral, 8×8 or Vonage, but that is a halfway house, with them simply reselling VoIP and not utilising the true power of their cellular infrastructure. They could develop new systems themselves, but that is going to take time and resources, and they may hit walls with patents and IP. Alternatively, they could integrate an off the shelf solution like conXhub Middleware, which could provide all the communications functions and features that customers expect from VoIP but embedded into the operators’ own Cellular systems.
Imagine, end users able to make calls from their business numbers over an Operator’s cellular network, without needing a second handset or SIM. Imagine customers deciding how to route their calls, giving them options for; announcements, time of day routing, queues, music on hold, virtual assistance and voicemail and then routing any calls to a chosen user over the cellular network. Isn’t this the “Holy Grail” of communications? Mobile First PBX systems, it’s the solution dreams are made of!
2024 could very well herald the start of a new “Golden Era” for mobile operators. A period of renewed revenue gains rather than the endless round of cost-cutting. Mobile Operators have an incredible opportunity, they have the means and they should have the desire!
It will be interesting to see which operators chase towards “them thar hills”, and which sit back.
