Could Mobile Network Operators Fill a VoIP-less Communication Gap?

It’s undeniable that the advent of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has dramatically reshaped the global telecommunications industry. But, what if this groundbreaking innovation hadn’t come into existence? Would we find ourselves at a communication standstill, or could mobile operators have stepped up to fill the void with equivalent solutions based on cellular technology?

In the absence of VoIP, mobile operators would have a compelling reason to innovate and streamline their services.

One of the most prominent issues that VoIP effectively addressed was the high cost of long-distance communication, and operators would need to reimagine tariff structures, negotiating improved interconnection deals, or investing in technology to reduce operational costs.

In addition, they might have developed advanced solutions for integrating mobile communication with other digital platforms and applications, offering a level of accessibility comparable to VoIP.

In our VoIP-less world, mobile operators would undoubtedly strive to stay at the forefront of technological advancements. Driven by a heightened demand for unified communication and seamless integration, cellular technology might have evolved at a faster pace, resulting in technological breakthroughs that we can only speculate about.

In a world without VoIP, it’s plausible that MNOs could have risen to the challenge, driving significant evolution in cellular telephony. As the old adage goes, necessity, is the mother of invention, and had VoIP not existed, the telecommunications industry would have adapted and evolved differently, driven by the ever-present need for cost-effective, efficient, and integrated communication solutions.

Today, operators are seen more as suppliers of infrastructure, leaving others to supply services that sit on top of their platforms. However, as the suppliers get richer the operators are faced with ever rising costs, a surge in usage and decreasing revenues. Something has to change with some 49% of Operator CEO´s acknowledging their business won’t survive in its current state and there is no denying that we are at a crossroads.

At conXhub we imagine a world where Voice Communications is no longer the preserve of VoIP suppliers but firmly in the hands of the operators. We see them offering all the functions, features and services of VoIP, like swappable CallerID´s and PBX switchboard functions, but across the cellular network.

There is no denying that operators could leverage their incredible power to upgrade customers to additional VoIP like services, and it’s actually quite a simple task. Let the games begin!
